Technical

wo smiling KLM technicians standing together in a maintenance hangar.

At our engineering departments, thousands of specialists work on aircraft, engines and components. Together, we ensure that our fleet – and that of more than 200 international customers – remains safe and reliable.

Within our technical departments, your work supports every stage of aircraft maintenance. From inspections and overhauls to modifications and maintenance planning, your expertise keeps aircraft in service worldwide.

Every technical department is directly connected to our passengers and crews. No aircraft takes off without thousands of technical decisions behind it. Each decision contributes to safety, reliability and continuity of operations.

Proven procedures go hand in hand with new technology. Digital maintenance systems, data analysis, 3D scans and test cells support your work. Technology helps you work smarter, but your expertise remains decisive.

What this looks like

Every day, colleagues bring engineering to life across our technical departments.

In the hangars, complete aircraft are inspected down to the smallest bolt. Focus, teamwork and attention to detail guide the work. Within Airframe, engineers and technicians ensure that aircraft structures meet the highest safety standards.

Within Engine Services, specialists rebuild aircraft engines and test performance under extreme conditions before they return to service. At Component Services, teams repair hydraulic systems, avionics and landing gear, ensuring every component performs exactly as required.

Within Engineering & Staff, engineers work on fleet-wide improvements such as modifications, software updates and new maintenance programmes. Often invisible, but essential to every flight.

Engineering goes beyond the hangar

When you think of engineering at KLM, you probably picture an aircraft in maintenance. Fair enough. But technical expertise runs through the entire company, far beyond Engineering & Maintenance alone.

Across other divisions, operations rely just as much on solid engineering knowledge and smart systems. In Cargo, teams make sure freight travels safely, efficiently and in full compliance with strict regulations. That means dealing with cooling chains, special loads and processes where reliability must be proven every single day.

Engineering is just as visible in ground operations. From pushback to baggage handling, from ground equipment to loading systems and energy supply. Without well-maintained equipment and sharp technical checks, everything comes to a halt. This is engineering at its most direct: fast-paced, collaborative and safety-driven. One technical issue doesn’t just slow things down — it affects the entire chain.
