KLM Taxibaan: home base for a flying start
An internship at KLM is about more than just gaining work experience. It is a period in which you discover what suits you, meet new people, and develop yourself in an international environment where collaboration is key. Supporting this experience is KLM Taxibaan: the association that connects interns within KLM and its subsidiaries.
We spoke with Nika, secretary of the board and graduation intern at KLM Cityhopper, about the power of connection, personal growth, and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.
A network connecting generations of interns
KLM Taxibaan has existed since 1989 and was founded with one goal in mind: to give interns a warm welcome within the organization. Over the years, the association has grown into a valuable network where students meet, share experiences, and explore the aviation industry together.
As secretary, I focus on internal communication and administrative tasks. Together with the rest of the board, we organize activities that are both educational and enjoyable, such as a company visit to the Operational Control Center (OCC). It truly is an association run for and by students.Nika, Secretary KLM Taxibaan Board & KLM Cityhopper Intern
Taxibaan helps interns look beyond their own department. This broader introduction to KLM, Schiphol Airport, and partner companies is what makes the difference. Students not only discover where their interests lie, but also which directions may not suit them as well.
Connection and development
According to Nika, Taxibaan is all about connection. “We connect interns with one another and introduce them to different parts of the industry.”
That is why the association organizes a wide variety of activities, ranging from company visits to the Schiphol Fire Department and KLM Catering Services to informal drinks, lunches, and seasonal events. In this way, interns have the opportunity to exchange experiences and build connections outside their own teams.
This sense of connection is especially important because interns are often new to a large organization. Meeting other students creates an environment where you can ask questions, share ideas, and develop yourself.
A place where everyone feels welcome
Inclusivity is central within KLM Taxibaan. Every intern is welcome, regardless of academic background or personality.
“Not everyone finds it easy to approach others,” says Nika. “We consciously take that into account. We want every intern to feel seen and to have a positive internship experience.”
According to her, these different perspectives are exactly what bring new ideas and fresh energy into the organization.
Growing within the KLM family
For Nika, being involved with Taxibaan has been highly rewarding. “I’ve learned how important collaboration is and how to communicate effectively with different stakeholders,” she explains. “On top of that, I personally learn a lot from all the company visits and activities we organize.”
She also describes her internship at KLM as something special. “It truly feels like one big blue family. People share the same passion for aviation and are always willing to help each other.”
Tips for new interns
Looking ahead, Nika hopes that even more interns will find their way to Taxibaan. She also sees opportunities to give students even greater insight into the organization.
Her most important piece of advice? “Most importantly, be yourself. Different personalities and ideas are truly appreciated within KLM. People are open to a fresh perspective.”
