Disruptive innovation

At KLM, innovation lifts aviation forward. With AI, AR and VR we shape smarter services, from 3D cargo scans to digital workspaces.
At KLM, innovation means thinking ahead. Every step is about exploring how emerging technologies can make aviation smarter, more sustainable and more customer-friendly. We look beyond proven solutions and test ideas that could make a difference tomorrow.
A central role is played by BlueLabs, KLM’s internal innovation hub. Here, multidisciplinary teams work on prototypes and pilots that can later be scaled into daily operations. From augmented reality to machine learning and automation, the projects developed here help improve processes, ease the workload for colleagues and enhance the passenger experience.
This is what it looks like
The impact of innovation becomes clear in real-world experiments. With VR training, cabin crew and engineers practice realistic scenarios without the need for an aircraft. Training becomes safer, cheaper and more flexible, while significantly accelerating the learning curve.
We also apply AI models to predictive analytics, such as calculating delays or optimizing maintenance schedules. These algorithms make operations more efficient, reliable and sustainable.
Innovation is not limited to software. With 3D cargo scans, automated technology measures freight more quickly and accurately. In pilots with robotics, we explore how autonomous systems can take over repetitive tasks in hangars and warehouses. And through smart workspaces, we design new tools and digital assistants that make work easier for colleagues across the company.
One of the most groundbreaking experiments is Pilot GPT, a generative AI application exploring how language models can support operations. From analyzing flight data to answering crew questions or simulating scenarios, these pilots reveal how AI could fundamentally transform aviation.
Room to grow
In Innovation, you have the freedom to experiment. You work with the latest technologies and collaborate with pioneers from different disciplines. Training, innovation programs and international projects help you test, improve and scale ideas. This creates opportunities to grow into roles where you lead innovation projects or shape strategic impact.
Your role
As an innovator in this division, you make the difference by spotting opportunities before others do. You build prototypes, run pilots and collaborate with colleagues to turn ideas into reality. In doing so, you help shape an aviation industry that is smarter, more sustainable and ready for the future.
