We are looking for Principal Software Engineers, who together organize all necessary engineering tasks and help maximize the flow of value. As a Principal software engineer, you will work shoulder to shoulder with other engineers, data scientists, domain experts, and frontline staff to shape the future of KLM and the aviation industry.

What are you going to do?

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will apply your skills to change the way KLM works, driving innovation and transforming us into a truly data-driven organization. We value both technical expertise (analysis, design & architecture, engineering, quality assurance and devops) as well as the interpersonal parts of the job (coaching, consulting, coordination, and support).


As a Principal Engineer, your key result areas are:

  • Choose technology and govern architecture for products in line with the broader objectives, ensuring that the right technologies are chosen to strike an optimal balance between achieving business goals, realizing functional and technical requirements, and managing technical debt, development costs and continuity costs
  • Ensure that the architecture and design of products is in accordance with the latest industry best practices on architecture and software design, and that product architecture within teams follows enterprise-wide architecture principles and target architecture
  • Support the organization in managing lifecycle management by working towards the decommissioning of legacy systems to maintain a healthy architecture and technology stack in the IT landscape surrounding the department by implementing strategies to modernize existing applications and bring them up to the latest organization standards.
  • Take a leading role in the Software Engineering community by catalyzing the spread and implementation of new ideas, technologies, best practices, architecture, tooling, and anything else that pushes and keeps the craftsmanship at the leading edge
  • Translate business needs into compelling products and deliver them to end users so that business value is created
  • Take care of the full software development cycle
  • Foster a culture where state-of-the-art approaches, tooling and technologies are applied as fits with the mission of the department, the KPI’s and desired business impact


Where do you land?

You will land at the heart of KLM’s passenger and employee business domains. Your team will be located at Schiphol and/or KLM Headquarters where you will work directly alongside the business that uses the products and features that you deliver. 


Your profile

We are looking for passionate and talented principal software engineers, for curious builders who are biased towards action, communication and are thriving in a fast-paced and international environment.


We have found that people who match the following requirements are the ones who fit us best:

  • Bachelor degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other relevant fields
  • 12+ years of experience building production-grade software
  • Polyglot development practitioner, strong skills in at least two relevant technical platforms with the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies.
  • Experience leading communities in adoption of software engineering best practices through talks and in writing
  • Great communication skills, written and spoken (English)
  • Great team player, an inspirational personality with a passion for coaching others and helping them grow and explore their talents.
  • Strong in stakeholder management and how to get things done in a large enterprise organization
  • Practical experience and a strong theoretical basis for dealing with complex architectures
  • Agile methodologies enthusiast (certification is a bonus but not required, practical experience however is a must)
