Introduction

Flight KL691. Made possible by you, Data Science Leader. Together with your team(s), you ensure a pleasant journey for our passengers, from the moment they have booked a ticket until their plane leaves the gate. As a KLM employee, you contribute to unforgettable flights. Whatever you do.

What are you going to do?

You are a member of the Platform Leadership Team. Together with your fellow Data Science Leader you support the Director of Technology to identify and implement innovative technologies, and you advise the Director of Product and business owners in determining new Data Science opportunities.

You are the manager of a team of up to 10 Data Scientists and Data Analysts. As such you are responsible for the quality and performance of their contribution to the teams and for their well-being and job satisfaction. Next to that, you have time (50%) to work on the development of Data Science products, as a developer or as a lead for complex projects.

You play a leading role in the Community of Practice of Data Scientists that catalyzes the spreading of new ideas, technologies and best practices. And you join forces with the Data Science Leaders from other platforms to devise common practices.

Where do you land?

On the business platform Ground. Where eleven different teams with product owners, scrum masters, data scientists and software-engineers work. You are responsible for a number of the data scientists and analysts. You work closely with the Director of Technology and are part of the tech management team. You will do all this from our office at Schiphol Airport, the center of the KLM Ground Operation.

You will make our operation continually more intelligent. For example, by monitoring disruptions in the ground handling process or baggage handling, designing a system that enables us to re-book passengers faster or optimizing the use of our airside and resources. Thanks in part to you, our passengers' luggage arrives at the destination airport on time, and travelers who have missed their flight can quickly get back on their way as processes are supported by our intelligent software. At Schiphol Airport and at our outstations all over the world.  You will do all this based on predictive data, passenger flows and historical data. In this way, you will contribute to our goal of becoming the number one data- and technology-driven airline.

Your profile

You love complex problems and enjoy solving them even more. You are not afraid of change. In fact, you want to constantly improve our services. You speak various programming languages, but also enjoy coaching and guiding software engineers. Because you often work in teams on a project, it is important that you can work well together.

Also:

  • You are an expert, with extensive experience in either Operations Research or Machine Learning and familiar with both.
  • You have up-to-date knowledge on state-of-the-art technologies and industry best practices, and you are experienced in applying data science in a business context.
